2005 Virginia License Renewal Requires Declaration of Continuing Education Credits - Ignorance of the Law is No Excuse!
The following information was obtained primarily from the Virginia Department of Health Professions’ Web site. Please check this site for more complete information about the requirement for continuing education.
-
When must I have the required hours of continued competency activities completed in order to renew my license?
Radiologic Technologists will be
required to sign on your renewal form in 2005 that you have completed
24 hours of continued competency activities. Radiologic Technologists –
Limited will be required to sign on your renewal form in 2005 that you
have completed 12 hours of continued competency activities.
Falsification on the renewal form (checking that you have 24/12
hours when you don't) is a violation of law (FRAUD) and may subject you
to disciplinary action.
-
What type of continued competency activities do I need?
Radiologic Technologists need
continuing education activities that are acceptable to and documented
by the ARRT within the last biennium. At least 12 of the 24 hours must
be acceptable to the ARRT as Category A. (See Web site for more
information about "Category A".)
Radiologic Technologists – Limited need 12 hours of Category A
continuing education activities (corresponding to the anatomical areas
in which the limited licensee practices) that are acceptable to and
documented by the ARRT within the last biennium. (See Web site for
information regarding those licensed for podiatry or bone
densitometry.)
- Am I required to send in evidence of my continued competency activity hours at the time I renew?
No. The Board will randomly select
licensees for a post-renewal audit (as many as 10% of licensees). If
selected, you would be notified by mail that documentation is required
and given a time frame within which to comply.
- When do the continuing competency requirements begin?
Hours must be obtained within the two years
immediately preceding license renewal in 2005. (Note to Radiologic
Technologists: This may not coincide with your ARRT biennium.) You can
not use hours earned before the 2 year period, nor can you carry over
excess hours to the following biennium.
- Who maintains the required documents for verification continued competency activities?
It is YOUR responsibility to
maintain the certificates and any other continued competency forms or
records for four years following renewal in 2005 and thereafter. Do not
send any forms or documents to the Board of Medicine unless requested
to do so.
- What if I am newly licensed during the
2003-2005 biennial? Do I still have to obtain the full 24/12 hours of
continued competency?
No. There is an exemption for the first biennial renewal following your initial licensure in Virginia .
